 During the days of the bubonic plague folklore states that a band of crooks circulated among the dead and dying robbing them of their possessions and gold teeth without contracting the disease themselves.The authorities didn't worry much about catching them because they felt the disease itself would eventualy eliminate them. Not so!
After time passed a trap was set and the band of crooks were eventually caught. Appearing before the magistrate they were offered leniency if they shared how they were able to mingle and rob the afflicted and not die from the disease themselves. They explained that they were perfumers and oil peddlers and that they mixed a concoction of ingredients and used it on their bodies before making contact with the afflicted.
The mixture was of herbs and oils from plants and vinegar it is recorded in publications from that century when these oils and mixtures were discovered.
